Washington, DC News Conference - GOP congressional candidate Andy Martin calls the proposed Ryan/McConnell tax cut a “lump of coal” for the American people and asks President Trump to tear up the current 550+-page tax proposals and start fresh with a clean sheet of paper and “simple English” provisions

New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin calls the proposed Ryan/McConnell “tax cut” a “lump of coal for the American people” and asks President Trump to rip up his “Christmas present for the American people” and start from scratch with a clean sheet of paper and an honest approach to legislating financial fairness. Andy says the proposed tax cut plan will devastate the people of New Hampshire (and Florida).

New Hampshire congressional candidate Andy Martin says the proposed 2018 “tax cut” is the “greatest scam in American political history” and will lead to the downfall of the Republican Party

Andy says President Trump’s “Great Christmas Present for the American people” is in reality nothing more a lump of coal for New Hampshire citizens”

Andy says congressional leaders are pursuing a cynical two-step approach of “exploding the deficit and then using the massive deficit as a pretext to gut Medicare and Social Security”

Andy details some of his objections in a letter to the president which is published below.

(Manchester, NH) (December 8, 2017New Hampshire First District GOP congressional candidate Andy Martin will hold a Washington, DC news conference today, Friday, December 8th to announce he has asked President Trump to junk his proposed tax cut. Andy says Trump’s tax cut is not a “great Christmas present” as Trump claims but rather a “lump of coal” for New Hampshire citizens. Andy has been and continues to be a Trump supporter.

Andy will hold his news conference at the Capital Hilton, two blocks from the White House. He may be reached both through the hotel switchboard after 4:00 P.M. as well as on his cell phone (917) 664-9329.

Andy detailed his objections to the “lump of coal” Ryan/McConnell tax cut, mistakenly styled by Trump as a “Christmas Present for the American people,” in a letter to the president which follows (the header on the letter has been removed):

December 8, 2017

President Donald Trump
The White ouse
Washington, DC House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Trump:

I supported you and voted for you in 2016. You were clearly the better candidate. And, if you run for reelection I expect to support and vote for you again. I don’t see a credible opponent on the horizon. The fact that I am a supporter, however, does not mean that as a newly-elected U. S. Representative I would write you a blank check. I will support your policies when they are good for the people of New Hampshire, and call you out when you propose legislative solutions that will hurt the Granite State.

Unlike many of your opponents, I have known you for almost forty years, since I approved your lease to move into the building where I served on the board of directors, the Olympic Tower Condominium in New York. Over the decades our paths have crossed, so I have a great deal of familiarity with your earlier modus operandi. During the 2016 campaign you were commendable honest in admitting you built your real estate business on puffery and inflated claims.

But running the presidency is not like running a private corporation. Truth is the coin of the realm when you hold the trust of the American people.

Which brings me to your proposed “great Christmas present,” a proposed tax cut for 2018. In reality, your “Christmas present” is a big, fat lump of coal for all the people of New Hampshire.

My suggestion: tear up the obscene 550+-page tax law and direct Congress to come back with a simplified tax cut for the American people and for American businesses. I want a tax law short and simple enough so that a New Hampshire high school graduate can read it and have a fair understanding of what Congress is doing.  Why is it that legislatures pass laws mandating “simple English” for consumer contracts, but then don’t apply the same principles to themselves?

The use of handwritten additions to the tax proposal in the Senate, and senators voting on a bill that was not even in final printed form, were and remain an obscenity. That is no way to legislate and, more importantly, that is no way for you to lead.

Many of the claims you have made in support of the tax law monstrosity are simply untrue. The law will not lead business executives to favor their employees with higher pay; only markets can do that. You didn't give away inflated salaries to your employees; why claim that executives will act contrary to the practices they have established over decades?

My poster girl for corporate greed is a lady who should be familiar to you because you encountered her handy work in 2016: Irene Rosenfeld. Rosenfeld is the chief executive of Mondelez International, formerly the National Biscuit Company or as we both grew up knowing it, ”Nabisco.” She makes cookies, but she keeps the plums for herself.

Rosenfeld was a competent chief executive and she improved the company’s profits. She is retiring soon, having paid herself almost a quarter of a billion dollars over the last decade. How much of her increased profits at Nabisco did she share with Nabisco employees? Probably none. May I remind you she fired her workers and moved cookie production to Mexico. You promised to boycott Oreos. Are you keeping your promise? Last I heard she still had her cookie factories in Mexico. So Rosenfeld got rich by firing her employees. How much of the “tax cut” will she or her successor share with her employees” None. Greed won out. Sound familiar?

So the claim that giving corporate leaders more money will empower them to pay their employees better is utter nonsense. I could go through all of the provisions of the tax cut proposal, such as the billion-dollar estate tax gift to your own company, but why bother? Be real. And be honest. You are a smart man, and you know that the claim that the tax cut will benefit the middle class is sheer bunkum. The tax it is a giveaway to millionaires and billionaires, with a lump of coal left behind for ordinary working families. Some Christmas present.

Usually, Democrats are dead wrong on public policy. But in criticizing the Ryan/Connell/Trump tax cut they have the better of the argument. The “tax cuts” may even hurt working families. They could overheat an economy that you have already, successfully, taken to full employment and strong growth. In other words, the tax cuts could end undermining your own success in improving the economy. As Episcopalians say, “be careful what you wish for…”

The politics of the tax cut are also toxic for your political future. Ironically, ordinary Americans know the tax cut proposal is a corporate scam, so why are you trying to deceive them?

If you sign the tax cut, you will very likely be guaranteeing a Democratic majority in the House in 2019, and an almost-guaranteed article of impeachment for your presidency.

“Swamp Republicans,” moreover, have been candid about their goals: to repay demands being made by “contributors and the donor class.” I did not see anyone saying they were under pressure to help ordinary American families rebuild heir finances.

The reason the tax cuts are utterly cynical, and suicidal for the Republican Party, is that from Speaker Ryan on down the bill’s supporters have told the truth about their real goal: they want to explode the deficit by giving away a trillion dollar windfall to corporate America, and then use the ensuing deficits to eviscerate Medicare and Social Security.

Don’t Mess with my Medicare!

And don’t mess with the Medicare and Social Security of New Hampshire citizens. New Hampshire has one of the oldest populations in the nation: congress is pointing a dagger at our senior citizens by planning to use the tax cut deficits as a basis to destroy Medicare and Social Security.

You ask too much of me and too much of any New Hampshire Republican when you ask me to betray our people so that Wall Street business executives can get richer, while ordinary senior citizens are impoverished.

What Ryan and his supporters in congress are proposing is the greatest political scam in American history: build a bigger deficit, and then try to force the middle class to subsidize their own financial ruin. It’s greedy and it’s crass and it will destroy all of the gains the GOP made during the Obama era.

So, by all means, pass a tax cut bill his year. I support you in doing so. Tell congress to pass a bill with no more than 25 pages, all printed in advance, with simple English language provisions, and with no secret “special sauce” for donors and corporations. Pass simple, straightforward tax cuts for individuals and, yes, even for corporations. I am not against tax cuts or tax reform for businesses, I strongly support them. But I equally strongly oppose the tax cut fraud that is being legislated by the Republican leadership today.

If you follow my advice, which is not protected by the attorney-client privilege, you will ensure that you enjoy a bigger majority in 2019. Who knows, I might win and be there to support you, the same way I have been getting along with you for almost forty years. Forty years ago when I approved your lease, who knew?

Merry Christmas and please make it a Happy New year for the American people, with an honest tax cut, not the monstrosity that is current being processed by Ryan/McConnell & Co.

Sincerely,

Andy Martin

Andy Martin reminisces on half a century fighting corruption in Chicago and Illinois politics

Andy says that the momentum created by reformers and corruption fighters of the 1950’s and 1960’s is all gone

Andy continues his efforts on behalf of public integrity, primarily in New Hampshire but also nationally and in Chicago/Illinois

(CHICAGO) (October 22, 2017) Andy Martin came from New England to play football at Illinois. He has stayed for over half a century helping fight corruption and broadening his base into a national and international campaign for public integrity. Sunday he celebrates fifty (50) years of fighting Chicago and Illinois state corruption.

“When I came to Illinois on a short visit I did not envision the state and city of Chicago would gobble up so much of my early life. Until I returned to my New England roots almost a decade ago I was actively involved in fighting the endless run of bad guys in city and state politics. On relocating my home, I promised to keep a presence in the city and state to keep an eye out for egregious abuses, and we continue to do so,” Andy says.

“The landscape has changed radically. When I went to the Illinois General Assembly in 1965 as an intern to work on a senior thesis there was an identifiable group of legislators who actively were against Daley Machine asphyxiation of the state. These great American became my heroes and my eventually colleagues, and motivated me to work for the public good, not just for private advancement.

“Sadly, today the ranks of corruption fighters and reformers in the legislature has dwindled to the point of disappearance. The citizens of Illinois are poorer because of that fact.

“Later in the summer of 1965 I went to the U. S. Senate as an intern to work on an esoteric project: an analysis of the conference committee. From there in 1966 I joined the reelection campaign of Senator Paul Douglas. Douglas was the greatest inspiration to me, and his efforts on my behalf changed the direction of my life.

“Finally, by 1967 I was ready (intemperate enough?) to stand up and stand out on my own and challenge the Daley Machine. When I joined the team fighting to expose corruption on the Illinois Supreme Court (the Klingbiel/Solfisburg bank stock scandal) that signaled the end of my prospects as a lawyer in private practice. And yet I kept moving ahead, working for legal reform and exposing the bad guys year after year and decade after decade. I have not won every battle; indeed, every battle was a loser from the start and had to be converted, occasionally, into a winner, such is the hydraulic power of corruption in Chicago.

“What I find most interesting is that you make no friends even successfully fighting corruption. The good people hide, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral-style, afraid of becoming exposed or associated with active as opposed to token opposition to the power structure, and the bad people just keep on going. There were a few genuine reformers in the legislature: Paul Simon, Abner Mikva, Anthony Scariano, Leland Rayson, Dan Pierce, Bob Mann come to mind initially. Who are the reformers today? In 1967, the “lakefront liberals” had yet to be born (Hyde Park was an outlier enclave); today the term is a hollow phrase in so far as opposition to Rahm Emanuel is concerned.

“Ironically, the media, which enjoy promoting the exposure of corruption, because it adds viewers and sells papers, have been sadly ambivalent against the people who are actually in the trenches fighting the crooks in public office. Media operate from the perspective that bad public officials are entrenched, and anyone who stands up to them is what Mike Royko called a ‘googoo.’ Now that the media are in decline, we don’t even get the kind of corruption investigations we got in the 70’s and 80’s. ‘Media money’ is gone.

“Even though I have lived in New Hampshire since 2010, I still get requests for assistance from Illinois. We are working on a couple of projects at present. Later today I will be leading a tour of the Obama ‘presidential library’ site, and addressing that matter on Monday.

“In 2009, I predicted the relentless escalating violence that plagues Chicago. I was a prophet without honor, but my prediction was unfortunately 100% correct. Violence at a level that was inconceivable in 2009 is routine today, and no end is in sight. Rahm Emanuel thinks he can laminate a glossy surface on the corrupt underlayment of Chicago, and tax his way to a prosperous city. Never in history has such a policy succeeded. So, there is a lot of opportunity for reformers and corruption fighters to take my place and that of the others who came before. Welcome to the fray. There is always new work to be done.”

New Hampshire congressional candidate Andy Martin supports claims by Trump Election Integrity Commission Vice Chairman Kris Kobach that the 2016 New Hampshire 2016 presidential and senatorial elections were compromised by ineligible voters

Andy also supports New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner against demands that Gardner resign from the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity

Andy says America must take seriously the undisputed evidence of compromised national and state elections

(Manchester, NH) (September 11, 2017New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin will hold a news conference today, Monday September 11, 2017 to announce he supports claims by Kris Kobach, Vice Chairman of President Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity,
that the 2016 New Hampshire presidential and senatorial elections were compromised by ineligible voters.

“Last January I published comments documenting how and why New Hampshire’s 2016 elections for president and senator were compromised, (please see link [1] below),” Andy says. “I have been fighting for honest elections in New Hampshire for years, (please see link [2] below). Now Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has leveled accusations that are essentially the same as mine, (please see link [3] below). Kobach has come under attack by extreme liberals in New Hampshire and Washington, (please see link [4] below) and New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill  Gardner, who has an unblemished record of public service, has also come under attack, (please see link [5] below). Enough is enough. New Hampshire Democrats have unfortunately become vocal supporters of illegal and ineligible voting. The Democrats’ contempt for election integrity must stop.

“People can have multiple residences; most college students have a ‘home’ residence and a ‘school’ residence. But you can only have one domicile, and under the laws of most states domicile determines the place of voter registration. Domicile is your actual, permanent home, not your dormitory or temporary student residence. If your parents claim you as an income tax dependent, your domicile is at their home, not your college dorm. If you have an out of state driver license, that is indicative you are not a New Hampshire domiciliary. ‘Passing through’ is not enough.

“In New Hampshire we have transients registering to vote on election day, and then never actually establishing a legal domicile in the state; thousands of them, enough to determine the 2016 elections for president and U. S. Senator and perhaps other local offices. That’s illegal.

“The governor recently signed voter reform legislation but I am not sure even the new law goes far enough to stop people from registering on election day and then failing to confirm their domicile.

“I wholeheartedly support Kris Kobach’s claims, and I want to express my respect for the public service of Secretary of State Gardner. Granite Staters are fortunate to have such a conscientious public servant, and Democrats do themselves a disservice when they try to politicize Gardner’s participation on the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. Bill Gardner only wants what we all should want: honest elections in which every lawful New Hampshire citizen is allowed to vote.”

Dear Granite Stater:

I want to explain why I stand with President Trump on his Afghanistan policy. You will have a choice of candidates in the congressional primary next year. Most of them will “support” the president, cautiously. But I stand with Trump. Here’s why.

1. Preliminary observations about supporting Trump

I voted for Trump in 2016. If the election were rerun today I would vote for him again. Is Trump perfect? Are you kidding? We had a choice of two candidates, Trump and Clinton. Clinton was corrupt, secretive and manifested contempt for the American people. Trump stood up to the mainstream media and understood why America was failing. He was the only choice. I suspect Trump will be a formidable campaigner again in 2018 during the midterm elections, and in 2020 if he runs for reelection. The media and liberals underestimated Trump in 2016. They are still underestimating him.

2. My “on the ground” experience

I am sure my primary opponents will be decent and honorable people. I am not running to run them down. But they simply don’t have my experience in Asia and the Middle East. I will be the only candidate who has been in Afghanistan, alone, working in the middle of a war zone. When I talk with our military, they respect my knowledge and experience in the region. (I have been going to the Middle East and Asia for fifty years.)

3. America is not an empire, but we experience the same challenges as an empire

Americans want to bring out troops home. Trump did, and still does. So do I. But we are stuck in a world where ungoverned areas such as Afghanistan pose a threat to our civilization. On September 11, 2011 I narrowly averted being caught in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The killers were directed from Afghanistan. I am not sure we know today how many extremists groups operate in Afghanistan. Pakistan, posing as an ally, is an enemy. We face many of the same challenges as former empires, particularly with threats from remote areas of the world. Ever since World War II America has repeatedly tried to walk away from any global responsibilities, but we really can’t. We rely on commerce and free navigation for our economic prosperity. If we simply packed up and went home all around the world, our economy would falter and the world would be in chaos. I want to limit our foreign commitments but I don’t believe we can safely eliminate them.

4. Can Trump’s 12,000 - 15,000 troops succeed where Obama’s 100,000 troops did not?

The question has been raised, “President Obama sent over 100,000 troops to Afghanistan, how can Trump ‘succeed’ with a fraction of the force?” The answers are very straightforward. First, Trump’s limited commitment of troops is based on an open-ended commitment. Obama announced his withdrawal date when he announced the deployment of additional forces. Secondly, Trump has defined the limited mission. Most importantly, Trump has freed the military to defeat the enemy. Let me explain in greater detail.

5. President Obama’s tactics and rules of engagement defeated his policies

To understand how Obama tied the military’s hands, read the article in link #1 below. Our forces were precluded from defeating the Taliban. Then read link #2: lawyers were controlling military operations! Our fighting forces in the field were at the mercy of lawyers in a back office. No one could win under those restrictions and, not surprisingly, we didn’t. Trump is sending forces to Afghanistan to kill the enemy, not coddle them. Military officers will make combat decisions, not lawyers. And so, yes, a smaller force can be much more deadly when it is allowed to stalk and kill the enemy.

6. What about Afghan corruption and infighting?

Afghan warlords are defeating themselves and destroying their country, please see link #3. The situation is a mess. But Trump has limited the mission. He said “no blank check.” Do you think Trump is going to let the warlords continue to defeat our efforts? He will yank the entire mission if the warlords continue with their hijinks. Not only has he put our enemies on notice, he has warned our ally to cut the crap.

7. Is Trump making “crazy” decisions?

Liberals like to pretend Trump is crazy. Their behavior is despicable. Trump can be difficult, and often speaks out of turn, but he is a hands on leader who demands answers before he makes decisions. Take a look at what the “failing” New York Times had to see about how Trump supervised the evolution of his Afghanistan policy (please see link #4). Trump forced his military advisers to justify their proposals for more troops in Afghanistan. Trump did not write a blank check to his generals any more that he is writing a blank check to Afghanis.

8. Why Trump may be a brilliant commander in chief

Trump may be the best commander in chief in my lifetime. First, let me ask a question: why does America keep “losing” wars in the modern era? Answer: communications satellites. Before Viet-Nam, communications between battlefield commanders and Washington were fitful. During the Viet-Nam War, communications satellites made it possible for live satellite conferences between Washington and Saigon. As a book on the topic (please see ink #5) makes clear, more communications capacity led to more control of battlefield operations from the Pentagon and, ultimately, the White House. The result was disastrous. White House staffers became military managers, and combat effectiveness suffered. White House supervision of the military reached its peak when a room full of high officials watched live TV feed of the attack on Osama Bin Laden’s hideout. Trump is the first president to put decision-making authority back in the Pentagon and back on the battlefield.

While Trump has been ridiculed by Democrats and the media for his January decision to delegate authority back to military officers, his approach is brilliant for its simplicity and acknowledgement that White House staffers are not better combat managers than actual battlefield commanders. By letting the people fighting our wars make decisions about how to fight them, and how to defeat the enemy, Trump reversed a fifty-year trend of military micromanagement from the White House. Trump’s approach is already showing results in Iraq and Syria.

9. Summing up

Trump can be difficult, obviously, but he has assembled the best national security team since World War II. They are making progress cleaning up the mess from eight years of Obama incompetence and arrogance.

I stand with Trump. When he is right he will have my 100% backing and when I believe he is wrong I will loyally tell him so. I am the only GOP congressional candidate with the national security experience to make a positive contribution on day one. If you value judgment, experience and even wisdom, you can support my campaign with the confidence I would be an effective congressman who could stand up to the Democrats and work to Make America Great Again. No other Granite State GOP congressional candidate can make that claim.

Sincerely,

Andy

(Manchester, NH) (August 7, 2017New Hampshire congressional candidate Andy Martin will hold a news conference today, Monday August 7, 2016 to announce he is running for the U. S. House of Representatives from New Hampshire’s first congressional district.

New Hampshire is on the road to recovery,” Andy says. “We have an outstanding governor who, working with the legislature, has brought common sense, practical government back to the state after decades of Democratic Party mismanagement.

“We have a Republican Party that is more united and functioning more openly and more smoothly than at any time in the recent past. Our state chairman is doing a superlative job of powering the party for future progress.

“But there is still much work to be done. New Hampshire’s congressional delegation is a shambles. We have two senators who are unfit for office, and two representatives who are an embarrassment to the state.

“So what do I bring to the nominating process?

“First, I will work to continue the unification process so that every potential Republican, conservative and independent feels welcome supporting NHGOP candidates.

“Second, I am the only candidate with actual Washington experience. In the past twenty years we have seen so-called ‘outsiders’ run for office claiming lack of experience as a qualification for office. The result has been decades of chaos.

“Experience counts. The key issue is not whether you ‘know how Washington works;’ it is essential to be familiar with the requirements and demands of any job, from the most humble to the most exalted, before you embark on seeking a new position. What is critical is whether you are going to Washington to be part of the ‘system,’ to make congress work for Rep. Nancy Pelosi, or whether you are going to make congress work for the American people. I have an extensive track record of public integrity and serving the public interest.

“In a few days I will announce an exciting new program that my campaign will support to help every New Hampshire resident, especially veterans, get a fair hearing from the federal government.

“Finally, the ‘elephant in the room’ in 2018 is going to be the Trump presidency. New Hampshire is an independent state. Candidates who tie themselves too closely to Trump and his staff risk alienating the voters we need to win. I will strongly support the president when he is right, and he is right most of the time. And I will not hesitate to counsel the president when he is wrong.

“Candidates who tie themselves too closely to Trump cannot win in New Hampshire. That's the reality. But Republicans who try to divorce themselves from Trump’s agenda, which I wholeheartedly support, also cannot win. Balance is called for, and balance is what I will provide.

“I must begin my campaign with an act of honesty and conscience. I was and continue to be a ‘Cold warrior” [see http://www.andymartin.com/cert.htm]. I was trained to fight the former Soviet Union, today Russia. Mr. President, the threat to our democracy from Russia is not ‘fake news.’ The threat is real and it is a dagger pointed at our democracy, both Democrats and Republicans. Please let the legal system and the congressional system do their jobs. As for yourself, please stay focused on growing the economy, cutting the tax burden and ensuring that our economy is the envy of the world.

“New Hampshire Republicans have a consistent track record of failure in nominating congressional candidates who can stand up to the attack dogs nominated by the Democrats. Democrats control all four seats in the congressional delegation because they fight, attack and usually manage to shred our own candidates. I have the experience to stand up to the Democrats and fight back.

“In addition, later today I will be appearing in Hillsborough Superior Court to support efforts by President Trump’s Advisory Commission Election Integrity to obtain limited information from New Hampshire’s voter records. I strongly support the right of every eligible American citizen to vote in the district where they actually reside. But I do not support voting by ineligible voters. In 2016 the Democrats in all probability elected a U. S. Senator from New Hampshire based on ineligible votes. The Democrats and the liberal media are wrong to criticize efforts to ensure ballot and voter integrity.”
