New Hampshire congressional candidate Andy Martin exposes a “plague of Fake News” in New Hampshire from Liar Kevin Landrigan to Dissembler John DiStaso

In his latest letter to New Hampshire citizens, congressional candidate Andy Martin explains how biased and incomplete news reporting is adversely affecting democracy both nationally and in local communities such as New Hampshire. Andy criticizes “Liar Landrigan” and “Dissembler DiStaso” for reporting “Fake News” that is distorting the electoral process. “President Trump is telling the truth when he says the media cannot be trusted,” Martin says.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

This letter is one of New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin’s continuing reports to the citizens of his district

Today Martin explains why Fake News is undermining New Hampshire’s democracy and why the “Fake News media” are writing their own obituaries by deliberately deceiving their viewers and readers.

(MANCHESTER, NH)(September 6, 2018)

Dear New Hampshire Citizen:

This is my fourteenth letter to you from the congressional campaign trial. Today I explain how local media are undermining your democracy and in the process destroying the backbone of a free press. And, today the Union leader furnishes the ultimate example of Fake News.

When President Trump first started attacking the “Fake News media” people thought he was exaggerating. He was not. Biased news and selective reporting are a growing cancer on the First Amendment.

In the colonial period and thereafter, 1750-1850, media were utterly biased, which is why Congress adopted the First Amendment to protect free speech by all. Almost anyone could start a newspaper then by scraping together the cash for a small printing press.

Today the costs of creating new media range from prohibitively expensive (a new newspaper) to impossible (government regulation and control of the airwaves). So we rely on the limited number of legacy media to present news reasonably fairly and accurately. They do not.

In New Hampshire we have a scandal because of the epidemic of Fake News by the Union Leader and WMUR. Today I will collect some of the recent Fake News and explain why it matters and why it undermines democracy. If, as is the case, the media won’t even report who is running, how can you know who is running? If actions by a candidate are also falsely credited or outright stolen by reporters, how can you gain an appreciation of whether a candidate is qualified or running an effective campaign? You can’t.

Let’s start with the ultimate in Fake News, a false story by the Union Leader today. In an earlier email I mentioned the debate being held this evening. I even predicted the Union Leader would attempt to deceive readers. How right I was! The debate is sponsored by WMUR, the Union Leader and the NHIOP at St Anselm’s. Kevin Landrigan, who may be the “dirtiest” journalist in New Hampshire, wrote a story about the debate (please see link [1] below) and didn’t even mention everyone who is participating. Landrigan falsely portrayed the debate as being between only two candidates. What are his readers going to think if they tune in and numerous candidates pop up? Lying about your own news event has to be the grandest example of Fake News I have ever seen. Hats off to Liar Landrigan.

During this primary campaign I have totally thrown over the tables of the media frauds and the toxic distortions of the local political class. Using my knowledge of the “Right to Know law,” usually called “freedom of information,’ and judicial procedure, I have negotiated the disclosure of thousands of pages of documents involving Andy Sanborn and Eddie Edwards and thrown their campaigns into disarray.

I was also the first to attack Maura Sullivan for falsely claiming in her advertising and speeches that she had “fought” in Iraq when she had been a supply officer. Maura -- shall we call her the “Wonder Woman of the Marine Corps” -- is an embarrassment to real warriors.

In sum and substance, I have waged a devastating primary campaign against my opponents but you would never know that because the Fake News media have suppressed virtually all mention of my efforts.

Let’s take a look:

1. Fake News by WMUR

     A. The Andy Sanborn files

In June, I negotiated the release of what became over a thousand pages of documents concerning Andy Sanborn. Before me, others such as (I believe) Susan Olsen and Robert Clegg, had failed to obtain the release of the Sanborn documents (please see link #2] below, where Ethan Dewitt has done some excellent Sanborn analysis but also fails to mention my name). In fact, I believe (not 100% sure) that even John DiStaso had tried and failed to obtain the release of Sanborn materials.

I announced in an email I had negotiated an agreement with the Attorney General to release the Sanborn documents. What did DiStaso do? The moment he learned of my agreement he cut-and-pasted his own RTK request using my original. Then, when the materials were released in July, he claimed, falsely, that “WMUR had obtained” the documents without mentioning he was piggybacking on my successful negotiation.

All summer “Dissembler DiStaso” has continued to lie to viewers and readers by falsely claiming he secured release of the Sanborn files, when he had failed to do so.

Why is the fact that I obtained the release significant? For two reasons. First, when others try and fail to accomplish a task, the identity of the person who actually succeeds is obviously part of the story. Second, using my legal and political expertise, I was and am still running an effective campaign, though you would never know that from DiStaso’s false claims he is securing release of the Sanborn files. In other words, DiStaso is literally extinguishing my campaign and its effectiveness, to falsely portray himself as a successful document digger, when that is not the case.

     B. The Eddie Edwards files

Once again, DiStaso is exposed as incompetent and lazy. The Edwards Settlement Agreement was negotiated in 2013. Edwards became a candidate in 2017. DiStaso, once again, did nothing about the Settlement until I announced I was seeking a copy in 2018.

Here is what DiStaso said: (please see link [2] below)
“WMUR received the settlement agreement from the attorney general's office in July of this year, after filing a right-to-know request with the human rights commission.” In so far as I am aware, the Human Rights Commission was never involved. But, once again, DiStaso had done nothing for five (5) years. He didn’t take any action until I announced I was going after the Settlement Agreement and only then asked the Attorney General for a copy. Once again, DiStaso erased my instigation of the release, trying to falsely portray himself as having obtained the materials on his own. Once again, the effectiveness of my research and analysis in the campaign was not credited.

I could go on, but you get the picture. DiStaso seeks to claim credit for my work without a single mention of who obtained release of the materials he is using. His behavior is crass, inconsistent with journalistic ethics and designed to destroy my campaign by pretending I do not exist. Political bias? Personal bias? Who knows?

2. Fake News by the Union Leader

     A. The Andy Sanborn files

When the original Sanborn files story broke, Liar Landrigan was away and the story was covered by another reporter who mentioned my name. By the time the final documents were released I had been erased and replaced by “many media,” all of whom piggybacked on my original agreement. The fact that I succeeded after others unsuccessfully tried to obtain the same material was left unmentioned (as it was in Ethan Dewitt’s report in the Concord Monitor).

Of course, if you were looking to your “local newspaper” to inform you what the candidates were doing, the reporters pretend there are only two candidates running. No wonder voters are confused and losing interest in voting.

     B. The Eddie Edwards files

Remember that the Settlement with Edwards was signed five (5) years ago. No one reported on the document until I filed a Right to Know request and sought disclosure. What did Liar Landrigan write: “Edwards offered new details … following a Right to Know Law inquiry made by the New Hampshire Union Leader and other media outlets.” No mention that it was my RTK request that secured release of the Settlement. (I am going to court Friday to seek more disclosures about both Sanborn and Edwards.)

Reading the Union Leader you would think I did not exist all summer, when in reality my campaign activity was turning the campaigns of my opponents upside down and creating massive disruptions for them. Liar Landrigan takes his readers for dopes who will accept whatever drivel he pushes out as “news.” Thanks to the Internet, Landrigan has been exposed as a habitual liar, who no doubt lies at the direction of his employer Joe McQuaid.

The Union leader is an embarrassment to journalism, and I will have more to say about that after the primary. I ain’t finished by a long shot.

     c. The Maura Sullivan fake “fighting a war” claims

Liar Landrigan did a front-page story on Maura Sullivan’s false claims she had “fought in Iraq.” Sullivan was using her ridiculous claim in both TV advertising and speeches. I was the first person to challenge Sullivan’s fraud, held a news conference and sent Sullivan a letter demanding she cease and desist. Landrigan credited the claims to another congressional candidate and did not mention my activity.

     d. The Balsams cover-up

Several months ago the Union Leader reported state officials were ready to approve a $28 million “guarantee” for redevelopment of The Balsams report in the North Country. Last month, the application for a state handout was withdrawn. What happened? I battled the developers, and state officials ultimately had to agree that The Balsams paperwork was nothing but a taxpayer giveaway with no hope of repayment. “Andy Martin blocks $28 taxpayer giveaway?” Big news? No news. Not one word of my successful participation has ever appeared in the Union Leader.

Once again, how would you know I am succeeding as a candidate, if local media completely erase my efforts from their reporting? Once again, Fake News, intended to mislead readers as to who is doing what.

Of course, the ultimate humiliation for the Union leader comes today, when the newspaper is sponsoring a debate where I am appearing, and Landrigan fails to list the names of the participating candidates, trying to pretend the debate is only between two candidates excluding me. Fake News. What a disgrace to journalism.

By depriving you of information about who is running and what the candidates are accomplishing during the campaign, the media are lying to you and undermining our democracy, which is based on the theory of an informed electorate.

WMUR has interviewed numerous candidates in the Second Congressional District, and my opponents in the First, but excluded me. Fair or unbalanced? The blatant bias speaks for itself. (My exclusion was apparently the work of Adam Sexton, not DiStaso.)

My late Uncle William Vasiliou, who was a proud UNH graduate, used to say he was a “”facts and figures man.” I succeeded to his mantle. I deal in facts and figures (see links below), and that is why I succeed where others do not. But the future looks depressing for New Hampshire. How can our democracy function in darkness? One again, President Trump’s criticism of Fake News at the national level has its counterpart in our local communities. Is it any wonder Americans are disgusted?

Internet news anyone?

Respectfully,

Andy Martin

New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin questions whether one of his opponents, Eddie Edwards, has the professional credentials and temperament to serve in congress

Unlike the Union Leader or WMUR, New Hampshire congressional candidate Andy Martin analyzes the employment history of one of his opponents, Eddie Edwards, and finds significant questions, as well as a gap in the evidence necessary to understand why Edwards was paid $160,000 for “racial discrimination.” Martin is a highly respected analyst and investigator, which is what New Hampshire needs in Washington to represent the state. “Unless you want to make a fool of yourself, like our current federal legislators have done,” Martin says, “you need experience to manage congressional oversight of the executive branch. Edwards can’t do that. I have a history, even extending to this primary campaign, of doing what it takes to bring out the facts and work for transparency,” Martin says.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

This letter is one of New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin’s continuing reports to the citizens of his district

Martin explains why, based on Eddie Edwards’ checkered employment experience, no major company or enterprise would hire him. Martin says if Edwards is not good enough to be hired, why would anyone vote for him?

(MANCHESTER, NH)(September 6, 2018)

Dear New Hampshire Citizen:

This is my thirteenth letter to you from the congressional campaign trial. I hope you enjoy getting an unfiltered view of the primary campaign instead of the “fake news” broadcast and published by local media (a new story on media fake news coming later today, see below).

Today I would like to discuss with you whether Eddie Edwards is qualified to be a congressman. The Union Leader endorsed Edwards a week ago. I said nothing because newspaper endorsements are expressions of opinion, not fact, and editors are entitled to their opinions. But Wednesday the Union Leader published a second, desperation endorsement of Edwards (please see link [1] below). Obviously the UL is worried Edwards is not connecting with voters despite biased coverage in his favor.

The constitutional requirements to be a Representative in the U. S. House are minimal. Edwards meets them. Likewise, I am not personally hostile to Edwards. I present my analysis based on investigation of the facts, but I like Eddie. Politics being politics you sometimes have to pulverize people you like. And I have been just as tough, probably more so, on Andy Sanborn.

So is Edwards qualified? What are the facts? I present the evidence, with my analysis. You decide whether if Edwards were a job applicant, any major firm would hire him. Would you hire the man?

Edwards served several years as an enlisted man in the Navy. He received an honorable discharge. But literally millions of men and women have enlisted in the military. Being an enlisted person does not qualify you for high office (unless getting to see how stupid officers can be from a more humble point of view is a qualification). Honorable service? Absolutely. Qualification for a high legislative position in Washington, not at all.

Although Edwards has airbrushed the five years or so he spent as a correctional officer in Strafford County out of his resume, he apparently served honorably and properly. Honorable service again? Absolutely. Is working in a jail a qualification for high office? Very doubtful.

In 1995 Edwards was hired by the Liquor Commission. He must have done a good job because ten years later he was promoted to “chief.” Honorable service again? Absolutely. Qualification for high office? I don’t see how.

In 2005 Edwards was promoted to “Chief” of Liquor Enforcement. This is where his troubles begin. Four years after being promoted to a policy-making position Edwards filed two complaints in 2009 charging racial discrimination. He alleged, apparently from the time he became chief, he was the subject of racial discrimination. But the Attorney General has refused to release the complaint files, and I am going to court to get them.

How did Edwards change from being a fine employee, worthy of promotion to an executive position, to become the target of constant bigotry? I don’t believe it. Edwards had served capably in jobs where he was not a policy maker. Once he became an executive, there is a serious doubt he was able to manage complex relationships. There is a massive gap between being a police officer and being a chief, between being a low-level manager and being a senior executive with complex and occasionally conflicting responsibilities. Edwards apparently was never able to make the transition.

Edwards’ successor says he inherited a Liquor Commission that was “dysfunctional,” and characterized by “mistrust” and “self-interest” (please see link [2] below):

I have worked in the law enforcement and investigations field for 20 plus years—most recently as the Division Director of the New Hampshire Liquor Commission, Division of Enforcement. These experiences, and the successes I have realized with this work, furnish me with a high level of knowledge and practical expertise in policy establishment and enforcement applicable to small, medium, and large-sized organizations.

My background as Division Director contributes to and reinforces my capacity to back these claims. As the state’s chief of liquor enforcement and licensing I turned around a dysfunctional agency, known for its endemic mistrust and self-interest, to one of shared mission and individual empowerment. The enhanced internal culture led to a much-improved public perception and operative working approach.

Either Eddie Edwards and the Union Leader are right, and Edwards did a great job at the Commission, or Edwards’ leadership was a disaster as his successor states. Where are the investigations and analysis by WMUR and the Union Leader to determine which version is true?

Based on secret files which the state refuses to release, Edwards walked away with $160,000 for “racial discrimination.” If Eddie Edwards won’t authorize the release of his secret files you are crazy to vote for him. What is he hiding? What do you need to know that he doesn’t want you to know?

From the fiasco at the Liquor Commission we turn to more tranquil employment. Edwards was hired as “chief of police” for a town of 800 residents. There is no suggestion that Edwards did anything but serve competently, but how competently do you have to be to patrol a town of 800 people with five or six officers? A qualification for congress? Be serious.

Edwards then turned up on the staff of former Congressman Frank Guinta. Here we have another serious problem. While working as a congressional employee, subject to a strict code of ethics for congressional employees, Edwards continued to operate a lobbying business in Concord. He claims he did not violate congressional ethics. Guinta says he didn’t even know of Edwards’ secret employment. Edwards may or may not have violated the law; but he skated awful close to a violation of congressional ethics, if not actually crossing the line. How can a full-time, federal congressional employee also be operating a private lobbying business on the side? It may not “smell,” but there is a distinct odor.

My campaign manager is a retired analyst and investigator (that’s all I can say). Me? I can’t afford to retire. But it is obvious that I did my homework, which is what a congressman is supposed to do, on both Sanborn (over 1,000 pages of documents released to date) and Edwards (secured release of Settlement Agreement). The media obviously did not do their homework, and they continue to portray Edwards as a viable candidate when he would be easy pickings for the Democrats in November.

So we come to the bottom line: would you hire Edwards for a senior legislative/executive job based on his history of conflicts? No major enterprise would. Then why should you vote for him and hand the Democrats an easy seat in congress?

Now you can see why I accuse WMUR and the Union Leader of airing/publishing “fake news.” You simply can’t trust their coverage. My research is annotated with links to my sources. They don’t have any sources except the public relations handouts of the candidates themselves. As an aside, Edwards would be one of a dwindling number of congressmen without a college degree.

Finally, today is “debate” day on WMUR and in the Union Leader (which will no doubt censor the event). I encourage you to watch because that will be the complete and unedited program. Details on the debate are found below. Debates are healthy and are the ultimate form of modern democracy. Later today we hope to have a pre-debate story exposing more fake news on WMUR and in the Union Leader.

Based on the deficiencies of Edwards and Sanborn, I may not be your first choice to vote for. But I may be your only choice. I know how to fight the Democrats. My opponents do not. If you vote for them, they will be slaughtered in November.

Or you can believe the Union Leader, which says Edwards has an unblemished record of “character and service.” Fake news.

Respectfully,

Andy Martin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

This letter is one of New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin’s continuing reports to the citizens of his district

Martin explains how his “Right to Know law” agreements with the Attorney General have devastated the campaign of his primary opponent Andy Sanborn

(MANCHESTER, NH)(August 28, 2018)

Dear New Hampshire Citizen:

This is my twelfth letter to you from the congressional campaign trial. Honestly, I didn’t think we would make political history in this campaign, but we have. After the way I have campaigned, and after what I have achieved, New Hampshire politics will never be the same. And we are still making history. We’re not finished. “There are miles to go,” as Robert Frost stated.

Ask yourself: what kind of a congressman would you like? Obviously, he would be a person responsive to the people of his district. Then you would want someone tough enough to survive in Washington, someone who isn’t a quitter. Finally, you would want a dogged investigator; because both Republicans and Democrats agree there is a lot to investigate in Washington.

I’d like to add two more qualities: you would want someone to be honest with you, someone you could be proud of. Most campaigns are focused on fear, fear of the “base,” fear of appearing to be less extreme than your opponent.

So how have I matched up with your expectations?

You wanted an investigator; you got one. I negotiated agreements with the Attorney General for the release of “Right to Know law” (“RTK”) information concerning two of my opponents, Andy Sanborn and Eddie Edwards. (More of Edwards in a subsequent letter.)

Today Sanborn's campaign is smoldering. He should have taken my advice and stepped down in June. Monday night the Attorney General released yet another installment of RTK materials and they were disturbing to say the least. The by now infamous “boom boom room” at Sanborn’s saloon was confirmed by another witness, with even more weird information.

The witness testified that Sanborn apparently invited the intern who started the state house scandal to Sanborn’s saloon, after closing hours, to a basement room where Sanborn was cooking somewhere in the vicinity. I’ve never heard stuff like this. But the “Boom Boom Room” appears to be real. Sanborn is reported to have asked the intern leading questions, which suggests some sort of recording capability in the “room.”

The testimony about Sanborn’s boorishness and crassness is endless.

Can you believe - I am sure Sanborn doesn’t -- that through my efforts we have secured the release of over 1,000 pages of testimony concerning the Sanborn scandal? Yes, over 1000 pages.

Now, either the people at the Attorney General’s office are all incompetent, and they wasted time and money assembling a record, or else there was something there to investigate. Let me explain a little bit more to you. When the TV lights are turned off, prosecutors are pretty conservative people. They do not like to bring weak criminal cases. And, no, Sanborn was not criminally charged. But in deciding whether to pursue a criminal case, the prosecutors assembled thousands of pages of testimony and evidence. I have only obtained a fraction of it, and I am still asking for more. Not being criminally charged is not the standard for electing a congressman.

So check off the first requirement for your congressman. You want a dogged investigator, you have one in me. My results speak for themselves, with more to come (big day tomorrow).

Knowing Sanborn was dead in the water if the truth came out, the Republican Party, from State Chairman “Joker” Wayne McDonald down to his munchkins at the local level, did everything they could to derail my campaign and defeat me. But my campaign gets stronger every day.

You don’t want a quitter? Well, you can see I don’t quit. The Attorney General did not want to release Sanborn’s papers until after the election. I persisted until we negotiated a deal for early release and it has made all the difference. I didn’t quit until I negotiated a good deal for the citizens of new Hampshire.

You want someone who will respond to the needs of your district, and take care of day-to-day business? I will be there for you every day of the year.

Finally, you want someone to be honest with you, someone who will make New Hampshire and you proud.

Politicians by nature are not brave men and women. Everyone talks about ending the partisan bickering, but no one wants to take the first step. You have to be very confident to take charge of the process.

I have made it a hallmark of my campaign - perhaps the only congressional candidate in the nation - promising to go to Washington and stop the backstabbing, the gridlock, the bickering, bad-mouthing and all the other abuses that have paralyzed the congress. I will make you proud because I have the guts and the persistence to pursue my goal.

Let me say one more thing about Andy Sanborn. What I find and found most astounding was that the most controversial incident of the Sanborn scandals, which span years of abuses, involved a gross comment made in front of his wife. Now I played Big Ten football, so I am no stranger to locker rooms. But almost everyone would be reluctant to make a gross remark involving his own wife in front of his wife. No one can decipher the secrets of a marriage. But Sanborn’s attitudes were becoming offensive fifty years ago. Yes, Sanborn is fifty years behind the times in his attitude towards women.

I wish we had the money to put the “Sanborn Papers” on the Internet. They are gross and crude, but they are also revealing about the candidate’s attitude in 2018. I do not hate Andy Sanborn, though I disagree with him. (And I am waiting for my “Mr. Rogers  sweater,” because Sanborn keeps calling me a “moderate,” which I am not.) I feel sorry for Sanborn that he took the totally wrong approach to responding to his scandal. Nevertheless, it’s over for him. There is still a lot we do not know about the Sanborn Scandal, but we know enough, some would say too much about the tawdriness of our state legislature.

I met Donald Trump forty (40) years ago. We were neighbors. I think he wants to do a good job. Most of us want him to do a good job. Few people want to do a bad job. But Trump lacks the political experience to leverage his good intentions. I have the depth of experience to help the president accomplish much of his agenda.

The First Congressional District leans “Republican” but it is not a right-wing district. We are not right-wingers in New Hampshire. Yet both of my opponents have flooded the state with right-wing Republicans endorsing their candidacies. In other words, they want to appear extreme in the primary to attract voters, while eventually ensuring their defeat in November.

On the contrary, I know that if I lie to you in the primary, I will pay for it in November. I have chosen to tell you the truth: I’m conservative, but an independent conservative, not a lockstep one. I will take on the toxic partisanship in congress and make a dent, a big dent, in that institution. Rest assured. I am a New Hampshire conservative of the old school. We get things done.

I have more respect for your intelligence than my opponents do. I know you want to win. You want me to campaign on a positive platform, not just bow to a rote right-wing agenda. I will protect Medicare and Social Security. While pursuing a conservative approach, I will ensure that no American is left behind. Our “Safe Stations” approach to helping drug abusers in Manchester is an example. It is based on local firehouses, neighbors helping people. But “Safe Stations” actually helps jumpstart the process of recovery (please see links [1], [2] below]). Conservatism in the service of a humane approach to government.

Over the weekend I told you about a church in Manchester, founded in the depths of the depression by brave souls including my immigrant grandmother. Eighty-two years later the church is flourishing. I use modern equipment, such as computers, email and other conveniences. But my values are old-fashioned, New Hampshire values. I will make you proud to have me as your U. S. Representative. I would never let you down any more than I would let down my parents, grandparents and others.

There is hard work to be done in Washington; I have a strong back to get started.

Respectfully,

Andy Martin
