New Hampshire congressional candidate Andy Martin predicts 2018 will be a banner year for Republicans in New Hampshire. He encourages citizens to run for vacant seats in the state legislature and, in an unusual twist, says his campaign will offer informal encouragement and support to candidates who need a guiding hand.

Dear New Hampshire Citizen:

This is my third letter to you from my campaign. I am writing to encourage you to run for the state legislature (General Court).

The 603alliance.com (info@603alliance.com) is organizing efforts to recruit candidates to run for the General Court. There are still districts with no Republican candidate. The New Hampshire Republican Party is also encouraging people to run for the legislature and Wayne McDonald will be hosting a recruitment session today, Wednesday in Concord (info@nhgop.org). I am adding my voice to their efforts as well as adding my own encouragement and offering to assist legislative candidates who need help or a little encouragement to file before the filing period ends this Friday.

First, the good news. President Trump is building a record we can all be proud to run on. The Democrats have been counting their chickens before they hatch. You have probably heard of the so-called “Blue Wave” that was going to sweep D’s into control of state legislatures and congress. To be blunt, “it ain't happenin’.” All of us probably have some aspect of Trump’s performance we wish he would change or improve. But look at the big picture. The economy is strong; are voters going to support Nancy Pelosi’s higher taxes and Barack Obama’s surrender-only foreign policy? Our economy here in New Hampshire and nationally is solid. Now that Republicans are in control, wages are finally rising. The flow of illegal labor has been stanched, allowing Americans to compete for better jobs without competition from illegals willing to work for scab wages. It’s pure dollars and cents. I think Republicans will do very well in November, and you could play a part in that victory.

Landslide elections, even surprise elections, often bring into office people who filed and then won unexpectedly as a “tide” defied expectations. Republicans can win in 2018. They will.

Second, Republicans locally are doing better. As with President Trump, you can almost always find something to criticize about the performance of an incumbent governor. They have to make decisions and they can't please all of the people all of the time. But, overall, Governor Sununu is doing a solid job. I support him. He is going to be reelected.

The GOP state chairman, Jeanie Forrester is also rebuilding the party. It is no secret that I was a critic of the former party leadership; year after year the departed GOP leadership cadre led us down the road to defeat through incompetence and corruption. But I believe Jeanie has opened up the Republican Party and I am doing everything I can to encourage her to run honest primaries, so we can all unite after the primary. I have no problem with tough primaries; I’m in one myself. But I know from experience that when party leaders play straight, candidates and their supporters come together more quickly and unify for the general election.

Third, if you file, you will not be alone. People are sometimes afraid to run because they fear embarrassment if they lose, or are unsure how to structure a political campaign. Some people feel they may be embarrassed if they run, and lose. That’s just not true. No one has any right to criticize someone who is offering their services to their state or district in an attempt to provide public service and leadership. Let me give you an example “ripped from the front pages.” Years ago I met John Cox. Cox has run for office several times, and lost. But he was never embarrassed to try or discouraged when he didn’t succeed.

A few days ago, Cox knocked off the former mayor of Los Angeles and won a spot as the Republican gubernatorial candidate in California. At least one sage Democrat has warned D’s they may be underestimating Cox. The moral; if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again until you do. There is no shame in trying.

Fourth, so you’re not alone. What does that mean? If you file for the legislature and need help, you can turn to my campaign for informal support. You’ll have someone you can help. Just pick up the phone and ask. No, I am not looking for work as a campaign consultant. I’m just offering to help you with your campaign, one Republican to another, and help launch your efforts. I’ll help people all across the state, not only in my own First District.

Finally, why am I offering to help you? There are a couple of reasons. Obviously, I want to encourage a full ballot. If I win the First District primary and take on the Democratic carpetbagger candidate from Cook County, Illinois, Maura Sullivan, who claims to be from New Hampshire, I want candidates all up and down the ballot trying to bring out the biggest vote possible.

I also know that if I help keep you on track, many of us will coordinate our efforts to build a Republican majority. I believe, passionately, in teamwork and I am ready to work with you and your team. Together we’ll be stronger and better if we work united.

Bottom line: I encourage you to run for the General Court. There are vacant districts and you could be elected! Go for it. Friday is the deadline. I’m here to help you.

Respectfully,

Andy
