FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
This letter is one of New Hampshire First District congressional
candidate Andy Martin’s continuing reports to the citizens of his district
Today Martin offers some positive thoughts about Governor Chris Sununu,
asks Republicans what kind of voters they really are, and also asks voters to
consider what the primary would have been like if Martin had not run.
(MANCHESTER , NH )(September 11, 2018 )
Dear New Hampshire Citizen:
This is my fifteenth and
last letter to you from the primary campaign trail. Later today I either become
the nominee for congress or a former candidate for this election cycle.
So this is a three-part
letter. First, I want to say some very positive things about our Governor,
Chris Sununu. Second, I want to challenge you to ask yourself, “what kind of a
primary voter am I?” Finally, I want to challenge you with a question: “What if
Martin had not run?”
1. Governor Chris
Sununu
Being the governor of a
very closely divided state is really a challenge. I think Chris Sununu does an
outstanding job. Over the past several months I have spoken at events with
Chris; I first met him a couple of years ago. I am impressed.
Last Saturday, in a barn
where the Seacoast Women were serving chili and there was a constant din of
background noise, Chris delivered a profound message to the party faithful. I
wish more of you had been there to hear him. Sununu said, “Those of us here are
the believers. But what about those voters who are not here? How do we reach
them? How do we bring them in?” (I am writing from memory and this is not
intended to be a verbatim report.)
Chris realizes that
simply preaching to the faithful is not enough. We have to constantly recruit
converts to our cause. It is not enough to say “I am a conservative,” and then
sit back and wait for the election returns. This is 2018, not 1918. We need to constantly
sell our party, sell our ideas, and sell our platform to voters. It is not an
easy job.
Very conservative voters
will complain, “He’s not conservative enough.” More moderate Republicans may
complain, “he’s not liberal enough.” How do you mediate in a party with a broad
spectrum of ideas and attitudes?
Sununu does a very good
job. He understands that Republicans alone are not enough to ensure victory for
Republican candidates. We need outreach, real outreach, constant outreach to
people who may not be familiar with our views and values, and who may think Republicans
are the demons they are made out to be by liberal media. We need to constantly
be changing hearts and minds.
Summing up, Sununu may
be the most underrated governor in America . He will win reelection, but it won’t be a landslide. The other
party is competitive and will unite behind their candidate. And, I cannot say
often enough, we are a closely divided state. Republicans alone cannot carry
our candidates to victory. You can be proud of the job Chris Sununu does to
keep New Hampshire conservative, and Republican.
2. “What kind of a primary
voter am I?”
Are you someone that
wants your candidate to be 100% in agreement with you? William F. Buckley once
said (not exact words) he wanted to nominate the most conservative candidate who
can win. I have not tried to out-conservative my opponents. Andy Sanborn
is a very conservative member of the state senate. But he is not very
effective, and he could not even persuade a majority of his fellow senators to
endorse him (Edwards has state senate endorsements). So just being a
conservative is not enough to win in November.
Sanborn keeps saying the
First District is a “Republican district.” It is not. It is a very, very
competitive district, a real tossup. Trump and others carried the district two
years ago because of the wave of new voters Trump brought to Republican
candidates. But Trump is not on the ballot this November. Republican winners in
the primary have a big challenge ahead of them on September 12th.
Eddie Edwards has tried
to match Sanborn on conservative issues, and done a pretty good job. But I am not
convinced Edwards has the depth of experience necessary to face the Democrat
“killing machine” that is waiting to attack the winner on September 12th.
Me? Am I perfect? Good
gracious no. The Democrats will attack me just as viciously as the others. But I
have decades of national experience knowing how to fight back. When Adam Sexton
misstated my record in the recent debate, I jumped on him. He was dead wrong
and I did not hesitate to say so. So, yes, I am probably by far the most
conservative candidate who can win.
I am committed to
fighting the toxicity in Washington . Disrupting congressional hearings is not “free speech” as some
Democrats have said. It is anarchy. And I will condemn the anarchy. But I will
also make a special effort to sit down with our opponents. No, my views and
values are not for sale, not even for compromise. But I know how to talk to
people, how to negotiate. I will also give the “Great Negotiator” a little
advice about toning down his Twitter feed.
So are you going to vote
for the candidate that said he was “most conservative,” and made you feel good
during the primary? Or are you going to vote for me, so we can fight the Democrats
and actually win in November? Ask yourself, what kind of a voter are you? I
hope you’re someone committed to winning.
Trump was not the most
conservative candidate during the Republican primaries. But he was the most
conservative candidate who could win. Justice Gorsuch and future Justice
Kavanaugh are proof positive that winning counts.
By falsely trying to
portray the primary as a “bitter” contest between Sanborn and Edwards the Fake
News media in New
Hampshire may have
sabotaged those candidates and created lasting hostility. I am not at all sure
that Edwards voters will vote for Sanborn. Sanborn voters may not support
Edwards. Poof. The general election is lost before it even begins. As a first
step to uniting the party I have promised that if you nominate me, I will ask
Edwards and Sanborn to serve as co-chairman of my campaign in the fall.
One again, I am the
conservative who can win.
3. What if Andy
Martin had not run for Congress? Or, put another way, think of all the great
work he could do for us in Washington
Ask yourself, what if I
had not run for congress? You would not have had access to over 1,000 pages of
information about Andy Sanborn. Whether you support or oppose Sanborn, you can
make an informed decision on primary day. I brought the “Sanborn papers” to
light through my work with the Attorney General. The Sanborn matter had been forgotten;
the media were ignoring it. Until I negotiated a deal for the release of the state’s
records.
Just think of how
shocked you would have been in October when the Democrats’ mudslingers unloaded
on Sanborn if he had become the candidate. Pretty devastating.
Likewise, you would not
know about Eddie Edwards’ $160,000 settlement with the State Liquor Commission.
Once again, you can make an informed decision. The Settlement was sitting on
the shelf for five (5) years before I asked to have it made public. The media
had done nothing to inform you. Just think of what it would have been like if
Edwards won the primary, and Democrats unloaded the Settlement on voters just
before the election. Pretty difficult.
Concerning the Democrats,
I have not defeated Maura Sullivan. But the record shows it was my constant bombardment
of Sullivan that finally motivated the “Cowardly Lions” (her opposing
candidates) to stand up and start challenging her. The media had made Sullivan
sound like a one-woman unbeatable wave. After I had a go at her, she doesn’t
seem so invincible any more.
My point: During this
primary I have done what a congressman does. I have challenged the conventional
wisdom and the established orthodoxy. I have opened up closed records for your
review. You don’t have to ask yourself, “Can Martin do the job?” I have been “on
the job” since I filed as a candidate, telling you the truth about the process
and letting you see the government’s secret files for yourself. All in all a very
effective performance. No one had a greater influence on the primary election
than me. Just ask my opponents.
Can one man make a difference
in Washington ? Well, I’ve done a pretty good job of making a difference during the
primary. Give me a chance to do the same in congress.
I’ll make New Hampshire proud.
I need your vote today
to continue making a difference in our state and in our politics. Please vote.
It will make a big difference.
Respectfully,
Andy Martin
