FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

This letter is one of New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin’s continuing reports to the citizens of his district

Martin explains how his “Right to Know law” agreements with the Attorney General have devastated the campaign of his primary opponent Andy Sanborn

(MANCHESTER, NH)(August 28, 2018)

Dear New Hampshire Citizen:

This is my twelfth letter to you from the congressional campaign trial. Honestly, I didn’t think we would make political history in this campaign, but we have. After the way I have campaigned, and after what I have achieved, New Hampshire politics will never be the same. And we are still making history. We’re not finished. “There are miles to go,” as Robert Frost stated.

Ask yourself: what kind of a congressman would you like? Obviously, he would be a person responsive to the people of his district. Then you would want someone tough enough to survive in Washington, someone who isn’t a quitter. Finally, you would want a dogged investigator; because both Republicans and Democrats agree there is a lot to investigate in Washington.

I’d like to add two more qualities: you would want someone to be honest with you, someone you could be proud of. Most campaigns are focused on fear, fear of the “base,” fear of appearing to be less extreme than your opponent.

So how have I matched up with your expectations?

You wanted an investigator; you got one. I negotiated agreements with the Attorney General for the release of “Right to Know law” (“RTK”) information concerning two of my opponents, Andy Sanborn and Eddie Edwards. (More of Edwards in a subsequent letter.)

Today Sanborn's campaign is smoldering. He should have taken my advice and stepped down in June. Monday night the Attorney General released yet another installment of RTK materials and they were disturbing to say the least. The by now infamous “boom boom room” at Sanborn’s saloon was confirmed by another witness, with even more weird information.

The witness testified that Sanborn apparently invited the intern who started the state house scandal to Sanborn’s saloon, after closing hours, to a basement room where Sanborn was cooking somewhere in the vicinity. I’ve never heard stuff like this. But the “Boom Boom Room” appears to be real. Sanborn is reported to have asked the intern leading questions, which suggests some sort of recording capability in the “room.”

The testimony about Sanborn’s boorishness and crassness is endless.

Can you believe - I am sure Sanborn doesn’t -- that through my efforts we have secured the release of over 1,000 pages of testimony concerning the Sanborn scandal? Yes, over 1000 pages.

Now, either the people at the Attorney General’s office are all incompetent, and they wasted time and money assembling a record, or else there was something there to investigate. Let me explain a little bit more to you. When the TV lights are turned off, prosecutors are pretty conservative people. They do not like to bring weak criminal cases. And, no, Sanborn was not criminally charged. But in deciding whether to pursue a criminal case, the prosecutors assembled thousands of pages of testimony and evidence. I have only obtained a fraction of it, and I am still asking for more. Not being criminally charged is not the standard for electing a congressman.

So check off the first requirement for your congressman. You want a dogged investigator, you have one in me. My results speak for themselves, with more to come (big day tomorrow).

Knowing Sanborn was dead in the water if the truth came out, the Republican Party, from State Chairman “Joker” Wayne McDonald down to his munchkins at the local level, did everything they could to derail my campaign and defeat me. But my campaign gets stronger every day.

You don’t want a quitter? Well, you can see I don’t quit. The Attorney General did not want to release Sanborn’s papers until after the election. I persisted until we negotiated a deal for early release and it has made all the difference. I didn’t quit until I negotiated a good deal for the citizens of new Hampshire.

You want someone who will respond to the needs of your district, and take care of day-to-day business? I will be there for you every day of the year.

Finally, you want someone to be honest with you, someone who will make New Hampshire and you proud.

Politicians by nature are not brave men and women. Everyone talks about ending the partisan bickering, but no one wants to take the first step. You have to be very confident to take charge of the process.

I have made it a hallmark of my campaign - perhaps the only congressional candidate in the nation - promising to go to Washington and stop the backstabbing, the gridlock, the bickering, bad-mouthing and all the other abuses that have paralyzed the congress. I will make you proud because I have the guts and the persistence to pursue my goal.

Let me say one more thing about Andy Sanborn. What I find and found most astounding was that the most controversial incident of the Sanborn scandals, which span years of abuses, involved a gross comment made in front of his wife. Now I played Big Ten football, so I am no stranger to locker rooms. But almost everyone would be reluctant to make a gross remark involving his own wife in front of his wife. No one can decipher the secrets of a marriage. But Sanborn’s attitudes were becoming offensive fifty years ago. Yes, Sanborn is fifty years behind the times in his attitude towards women.

I wish we had the money to put the “Sanborn Papers” on the Internet. They are gross and crude, but they are also revealing about the candidate’s attitude in 2018. I do not hate Andy Sanborn, though I disagree with him. (And I am waiting for my “Mr. Rogers  sweater,” because Sanborn keeps calling me a “moderate,” which I am not.) I feel sorry for Sanborn that he took the totally wrong approach to responding to his scandal. Nevertheless, it’s over for him. There is still a lot we do not know about the Sanborn Scandal, but we know enough, some would say too much about the tawdriness of our state legislature.

I met Donald Trump forty (40) years ago. We were neighbors. I think he wants to do a good job. Most of us want him to do a good job. Few people want to do a bad job. But Trump lacks the political experience to leverage his good intentions. I have the depth of experience to help the president accomplish much of his agenda.

The First Congressional District leans “Republican” but it is not a right-wing district. We are not right-wingers in New Hampshire. Yet both of my opponents have flooded the state with right-wing Republicans endorsing their candidacies. In other words, they want to appear extreme in the primary to attract voters, while eventually ensuring their defeat in November.

On the contrary, I know that if I lie to you in the primary, I will pay for it in November. I have chosen to tell you the truth: I’m conservative, but an independent conservative, not a lockstep one. I will take on the toxic partisanship in congress and make a dent, a big dent, in that institution. Rest assured. I am a New Hampshire conservative of the old school. We get things done.

I have more respect for your intelligence than my opponents do. I know you want to win. You want me to campaign on a positive platform, not just bow to a rote right-wing agenda. I will protect Medicare and Social Security. While pursuing a conservative approach, I will ensure that no American is left behind. Our “Safe Stations” approach to helping drug abusers in Manchester is an example. It is based on local firehouses, neighbors helping people. But “Safe Stations” actually helps jumpstart the process of recovery (please see links [1], [2] below]). Conservatism in the service of a humane approach to government.

Over the weekend I told you about a church in Manchester, founded in the depths of the depression by brave souls including my immigrant grandmother. Eighty-two years later the church is flourishing. I use modern equipment, such as computers, email and other conveniences. But my values are old-fashioned, New Hampshire values. I will make you proud to have me as your U. S. Representative. I would never let you down any more than I would let down my parents, grandparents and others.

There is hard work to be done in Washington; I have a strong back to get started.

Respectfully,

Andy Martin

Mount Washington Valley Economic Council is sued by GOP congressional candidate Andy Martin over debate discrimination

GOP congressional candidate Andy Martin filed suit Monday against the Mount Washington Valley Economic Council and various nonprofits/charities which support MWVEC, accusing the group of violating its tax-exempt, nonprofit neutrality by discriminating against Martin’s campaign and excluding him from a “Republican debate.” “MWVEC invited seven (7) Democrats but only two (2) Republicans to debate,” Martin says. “Why do they discriminate against Republicans and why do they discriminate against my campaign?”

(Manchester, NH)(August 27, 2018) --- As promised, Republican congressional candidate Andy Martin filed suit today against Jac Cuddy, George Epstein, the Mount Washington Valley Economic Council (“MWVEC”) and other charitable entities that support MWVEC, for debate discrimination.

A copy of the lawsuit and docket number are attached to this news release.

“Mr. Epstein and Mr. Cuddy found space for seven (7) Democrats but only two (2) Republicans, sounds a little one-sided to me,” Martin said in announcing the court filing. “I offered Cuddy & Co. a chance to avoid a lawsuit but they insisted on being sued. They could listen to me at a debate or listen to me in court, and they chose the courtroom.

“Let me be clear: entities which are nonprofits under New Hampshire law, and non-profit charities, are supporting an organization, MWVEC, that picks winners and losers in partisan primaries. That’s a violation of state and federal law.

“Someone is going to get stuck with a big legal bill for Mr. Cuddy’s arrogance and contempt for fairness and due process in New Hampshire politics.

“I have participated in forums sponsored by tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations, but they were always careful to avoid a claim of bias by inviting all candidates to attend.

“MWVEC wants to have it “their way,” the dirty way; now the lawyers take over.

“This will prove very embarrassing for the charitable institutions, as well as TD Bank, that are associated with MWVEC. We will be adding more defendants. We just picked a few to start,” Martin says.

“The MWVEC is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. They should not be picking winners and losers in primary elections. It could cost them their tax exemption.

“Major local and area companies contribute to the MWVEC. They are getting tax deductions for giving money to a tax-exempt organization. But, through the back door the organization is favoring Democrats and trying to lock my campaign out of the conversation.

“Ironically Democrats are also irritated by the contemptuous attitude of MWVEC, see e.g. http://nhlabornews.com/2018/08/guest-editorial-big-money-divides-candidates-in-1st-congressional-race/

“So I speak for Republicans, Democrats and independents when I call on MWVEC and its supports to stop the dirty politics. On this one, I am a nonpartisan advocate.

“Whatever happened to fairness and decency in New Hampshire politics? I have debated in major cities, and I’m not good enough for Conway? On what meat do these local Caesars feed? Cuddy & Co. disgrace the people of New Hampshire when they try to rig debates in favor of my primary opponents and favor the Democrats,” Martin charges. “Frankly, lawsuits are a lousy way to conduct an election, but my opponents leave me with no other option. I will not surrender to their bias and abuse.”

Because of IT problems, today Martin can only be reached on his cell phone (917) 664-9329.

First District congressional candidate Andy Martin explains to Republican and unaffiliated voters why so-called conservatives are panicking at his announced participation in the Granite State Debate

“My primary opponents rely on out-of-state ‘conservatives’ for their support,” Martin says. “Local Republicans by and large are not enthused by their candidacies. The advisers to both of my opponents have lied to their own supporters. Sanborn backers pretend that he only used foul language ‘on one occasion,’ when there is a diary documenting years of Sanborn’s inappropriate behavior.

“Likewise, Eddie Edwards’ replacement at the Liquor Commission stated he inherited a “dysfunctional” agency from Edwards, with poor agency morale (please see link [1] below). So, who’s right? Edwards or his successor? Edwards’ supporters pretend he was a great leader. The Liquor Commission says otherwise; he was barred from reemployment with the state. What does all of this mean? Please allow me to explain.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

This letter is one of New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin’s continuing reports to the citizens of his district

Martin exposes the hypocrisy of so-called conservatives that run rigged polls and muzzle free speech, all to nominate a sure loser for congress in the Republican Party

(MANCHESTER, NH)(August 27, 2018)

Dear New Hampshire Citizen:

1. In my last letter to you I explained how the supporters of
my opponents have done everything to derail my campaign. They have failed.

Last week I advised you that I would be part of the Granite State Debate sponsored by WMUR, the Union Leader and the NHIOP next month.

The primary has clearly expanded from a “two-man” race to a three-candidate race. (In a subsequent announcement I will explain why it is really a “one-man” election.)

So, who went after me the day after I was announced as a debate participant? The self-styled right-wing of the Republican Party, in the name of a blog called GraniteGrok. To the best of my knowledge the “Grok” had not mentioned my name in seven (7) years. So why, the day after I was invited to participate in the Granite State Debate, did a Grok writer suddenly develop an interest in my campaign? Obviously, something had agitated the self-proclaimed right-wing Groksters.

2. Skip Murphy, one of the founders of Grok, attacked my “experience” and ridiculed my disclosure of New Hampshire State official records which disclosed an intern had been taken to a basement room in Andy Sanborn’s saloon for a bizarre meeting. Murphy says he doesn’t like “my language.”

You can attack me on many levels. No candidate is perfect and in a lifetime of public service I have made my share of mistakes and attracted my share of detractors. But I don’t believe anyone can seriously argue that I am not the most experienced candidate in either the Republican or the Democratic primary.

I have broad international and foreign policy experience. I have been in and out of Washington and I know how to take command the day I take the oath. So, yes, while you are obviously free to vote for one of my opponents, most people would agree that if you want to send “experience” to Washington, I am the most experienced candidate to help the congress move ahead.

3. So what is really bothering the Groksters? In a nutshell: The First District is not a “Ted Cruz” district. That’s why the Grok feels threatened by my candidacy and campaign. I am actually talking common sense to Republicans and independents in the First Congressional District, not Republicans in Texas or Montana.

They are frightened by the fact I want to win the November election, not just endlessly debate “conservative” issues.

Neither of my two fellow debaters is remotely electable in the First District. Right-wingers love my opponents because they try to outdo each other pandering to conservative voters (the Grok-related “603 Alliance,” which I support, conducted a two-man “poll” and, surprise, one of the two “won,” but my name wasn’t even offered as an option). Unfortunately for my primary opponents, the views they are espousing in the primary will come back to haunt them, and defeat them, in the general election.

It is often said that the First District is a “Republican” District. That’s not really accurate. The district does lean Republican in registration, but the district’s Republican voters are New Hampshire conservatives, not Ted Cruz conservatives. The district “leans” Republican but it will not elect a right-winger. So, when my primary opponents try to “out-conservative” each other, they are declaring that they are incapable of defeating a Democrat in November.

About a month ago, long before I was included in the debate, WMUR asked me for some candidate background (please see link # 2 below). If you look at the “Why are you running for congress section” you will see I am profoundly concerned by the need for someone to stand up during a party primary and promise to begin the difficult task of ending the partisan deadlock and endless bickering in Washington. I am big enough and strong enough and experienced enough to do just that if you send me to Washington.

I really do want to “Make America Great Again” and the only way we can do that is to work with people we disagree with, and work to harness the collective energy of people whose views are across the political spectrum. I am the only candidate in either primary campaigning on a promise to promote reconciliation and a willingness to work with the other party, not just offering lip service to “bipartisanship.” In New Hampshire I have a winning message. My opponents had a bad week again (please see links [3] and [4]); judge for yourself.  That’s why I claim we now have a three-man race, and you have a real choice, a New Hampshire conservative choice, for congress.

4. No sooner had I made those remarks than Andy Sanborn pounced and said I was a “moderate.” My response was, “I’m not a moderate on the issues; but, yes, I am all in favor of moderation when it comes to trying to work together with the Democrats.” All of my life I have been a bridge between people holding conflicting viewpoints. People have respected me because my own views are honorably held, but I have always been prepared to appear before groups with whom I disagree and listen to conflicting ideas.

Guess what? I am a conservative. An old-fashioned, New England, New Hampshire conservative of the type that used to dominate New Hampshire politics. Today, when faced with a choice between a cartoon version of Texas conservatism, and a cartoon version of New Hampshire leftism, voters have clearly allowed Democrats to dominate our state in the last two decades.

I actually stand a chance of winning, going to Washington and serving honorably as I represent your interests and the interests of every Granite Stater, and not just follow the ideas of conservative think tanks that are divorced from reality.

In closing, let me say a good word about my detractors. I do read the GraniteGrok; I also peruse CNN and MSNBC. You should too. I want to read contrasting viewpoints. I find a lot to like in the Grok; I get leads and ideas from their columns. They are not bad people. But in my opinion, they would rather be “right” than win an election. (Two years ago, the Grok promoted a “fake candidate” in the Second District; he was exposed as totally unqualified.)

When I take to the debate stage next month, I am debating to win, not debating to debate. For Republican primary voters, the case comes down to one issue: do you want to win with honor in November, or would you prefer to nominate a conservative and endure endless debates about who is the “most conservative” candidate running?

I fully expect that one of these days Andy Sanborn will pull out a “Mr. Rogers” sweater and present it to me. I’ll be proud to accept.

I hope you will pay serious attention to the debate. I will make New Hampshire proud and make you proud. I can and will serve with honor in the congress.

Respectfully,

Andy Martin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

This letter is one of New Hampshire First District congressional candidate Andy Martin’s continuing reports to the citizens of his district

(MANCHESTER, NH)(August 26, 2018)

Dear New Hampshire Citizen:

Stop and Think: I am running as part of a multi-candidate race. My major promise is to be a conservative Republican, go to the House of Representatives and -- horrors -- talk to Democrats.

You would be forgiven for saying “Martin must believe in miracles” to think I can accomplish that.

Well, as it happens, I do believe in miracles.

My first memory of life in Manchester is of going to a funeral.

Father Pascal (he had a longer Greek name) had founded a new church. My grandmother was one of Father's most fervent supporters. The year was 1936, in the depths of a depression. Manchester was reeling from the collapse of the mills. The nation was imperiled by radicals and extremists.

Father Pascal and my grandmother (among about 100 founding families) had the temerity to start a new church, Assumption Greek Orthodox Church at Cedar and Union Streets (they have since moved to a beautiful new church on Island Pond Road). They went into debt! In the depths of the depression.

Well, eighty-two years later, Assumption Church is flourishing. Today is the last day of their Greek Festival. I invite you to come.

At 3:00 P.M. I will walk into the church as part of a tour. The tablets listing the names of founding families are on a stairway. I’ll be happy to show you mine.

Who would have thought that a bunch of impoverished immigrants could found a church in the depths of the depression, and that the church survives 82 years later? Sounds like a miracle to me.

When my grandmother died, Father Pascal preached services in Connecticut and Manchester. We were there to say good by when he died in 1951. The pageantry was unbelievable, which is why I remember the service. (I suspect half the people were there to say good by, and the other half just wanted to be sure he was gone.) There were endless processions of priests and bishops.

If you want to see the church, my family’s name on a tablet, and enjoy genuinely great Greek food, come by this afternoon and we’ll meet at 3:00 P.M.

Now you can see that in my DNA there is the belief that if you try hard enough and if your intentions are worthy enough, you can accomplish almost anything, even miracles.

I’m not suggesting that by talking to Democrats they are going to start signing the praises of President Trump. Not at all. What I am saying is that my congressional office will be a house of reconciliation, where conservatives and, yes, even liberals, can come to debate the future of our great people in a civil environment.

The process of healing has to start somewhere but, sadly, it never really does.

In primaries, candidates in both parties try to outdo each other savaging the opposition party and promising to inflict even greater punishment on D’s or R’s. There is always the ritual incantation of “bipartisanship,” “as long as you agree with me and I don’t have to agree with you.” (Ask President Obama how that worked out for him.) But the very essence of conversation is that we will not always agree. We won’t always succeed in persuasion.

But we can still talk.

Right now, the Democratic “base” cries out for impeachment of President Trump. But that process could endanger both our national and economic security. Someone has to sit down and quietly tell House members impeachment is a bad idea. In fact, the last time the Republicans tried impeachment, and impeached President Clinton, the tactic boomeranged even though Clinton was guilty as “sin.”

Democrats now want to adopt the very same approach that failed for Republicans. How’s that for the triumph of faith over experience?

I do not want to suggest I am going to be sitting around in my office all day, Mr. Rogers-style, waiting for Democrats to walk in. Once the president is aware his old neighbor is in the neighborhood, he’ll be on the phone. Actually, Trump needs me. I can and will do a lot to help the president. I almost always agree with his policies, but I do not as often agree with his tactics. And, as you can see, my tactics are very different.

But I am willing to try to bind up the wounds and try to heal this nation. Both parties have made significant mistakes. Neither has the right to claim moral superiority.

All of my life I have been someone who builds bridges, someone who is a reconciler. Four decades ago I helped warring factions speak to each other; no one could figure out what was happening, but in the background I was there talking to all sides.

So I have practiced what I am now preaching.

It doesn’t take a miracle to succeed if you believe in the goodness of people, and in the ultimate authority, and, yes, superiority, of our Constitution. Please give me a chance to try. I’ll make New Hampshire proud. We’ll get things done. For a change.

See you this afternoon at Assumption Church. Try and make it.

Andy

NH Young Republicans will get a taste of how tough Andy Martin can be on the Democrats Saturday, when he appears at a Young Republicans Lobster Bake and offers his view on how YR’s need to go out and proselytize disaffected Millennials

GOP First Congressional District candidate Andy Martin will attend a New Hampshire Young Republicans Lobster Bake Saturday and provide a demonstration of just how tough he can be as a candidate against the Democratic Party opponent in November. He will unveil his new nickname for self-proclaimed Chicago warrior princess Maura Sullivan. Martin wants to help YR’s become the next generation of political leaders. “It won’t be easy,” Martin says, “but YR’s have to go out and offer hope to those who think life is hopeless. Barack Obama lied to them; we will tell them the truth. We need to inspire, motivate and train YR’s to understand how they can recruit Millennials. The job isn’t easy, but they can do it.”

(Manchester, NH)(August 25, 2018) --- Republican congressional candidate Andy Martin will attend a New Hampshire Young Republicans Lobster Bake Saturday (please see link #1) and offer a few comments. Martin will demonstrate just how tough he can be as the Republican candidate in November.

“My primary opponents have been throwing mud against each other,” Martin says. “I am preparing a campaign to attack the Democrat in November.

“The Young Republicans are the bedrock of our party’s future, and the bedrock of America’s future. Many young people today, way too many, have been seduced by the false promises of ‘Democratic Socialists’ who are almost all political nincompoops. The ‘socialists’ are beneficiaries of an affluent society and a politically correct higher education system; in many instances they have been betrayed by their own Democratic Party overlords.

“But we can’t abandon these confused and often bitter ‘socialist’ individuals; we can help them help themselves. We can offer a warm and welcoming hand. We can reorient their thinking through dialogue and friendly persuasion. That’s where YR’s come in. YR’s can and should be the ‘bridge’ to American’s disaffected young people, the so-called Millennials.

“We must absolutely transmit to the next generation the morality and values that allowed America to be a beacon of economic freedom and equality second to none.

“But first we have to win in November, we have to campaign with honor but hit the opposition hard, very hard, campaigning on the facts, the truth and the issues.

“I am stunned by how dishonest Maura Sullivan is. That she should be taken seriously by Granite Staters is disconcerting. When did our state put up a ‘For Sale’ sign in Hollywood or on Park Avenue in New York? Sullivan is surely the most dishonest candidate I have seen in the last decade, since her ‘hero’ Barack Obama promised ‘the waters will stop rising’ and ‘the earth will begin to heal itself.’

“Saturday I will explain to YR’s why I am the toughest candidate to send against the Democrats and why the prospect of running against me would probably scare Sullivan into moving back to Chicago (Evanston). I attacked Sullivan at a ‘Bernie Bro’ forum some weeks ago, and she crumbled. I don’t have a lot to say Saturday, but what I have to say will be worth hearing,” Martin says.
